“I first met Judith, a music therapist, over 13 years ago at Nellis AFB when MUSIC 4 LIFE® was just a concept. Since that time her passion and far reaching vision has led to the development of a revolutionary music-based, life enriching program in mobile format available to anyone. In stride with today’s technology and applicable across generations, Music 4 Life’s Music Medicine Protocol and when marketed, Key2MEE® mobile application, offers the ability to regulate one’s emotions and self-control through their music choices. All this power can be available to all Airmen and their families to create increased resilience across all four pillars – physical, emotional, mental and social, through what nearly everyone has near them the majority of the day – their cell phone!”
Sixty-six Airmen from the 362d Training Squadron underwent Music Medicine training in December 2019 at Solid Rock Café on Sheppard Air Force Base with Music 4 Life® music therapists Judith Pinkerton and Donnie Lee, III, and health professional Dennis D. Burkhardt, D.C.
The training included:
• Three eCourses for mass learning at individual paces through cell phones
• Psycho-analysis of one Airman’s preferred song “Pumped Up Kicks” to address earworms (stuck song syndrome reference on report page 8) with Music Medicine remedy to achieve emotional balance
• Kinesiology demonstration of one rhythm to avoid when building muscle strength (reference anapestic beat, page 9)
• One 40-minute Music Medicine Pill™ (aka Mood Exercise Regimen™) guided meditation to demonstrate effects of emotional processing
• Breakout sessions to engage peer support building specialized playlists for personalized Music Medicine Pills™ (aka Mood Exercise Regimens™)
• Pre/post surveys and eCourse evaluations to measure effect

During the 2-day training, totaling nine hours thirty minutes, the Music 4 Life® Team supported SAFB airmen leaning on each other with optimal sharing for support, strengthening empathy and desire to consider, invite and accept diverse music genres to populate personalized playlists to optimize creation of Music Medicine Pills™ (aka Mood Exercise Regimens™) to optimize performance goals, i.e. physical fitness, and to keep them safe before, during and after deployment. Samples of individual summaries reveal personal insights (pages 14).
This music therapy-informed Music Medicine Protocol addresses also prevention and treatment courses. Colonel (R) Gerald Curry’s letter (page 15) advocates that funding be allocated to continue military trainings, supporting armed forces working at optimal health and peak performance.
